August 1965
A.J. Foyt (the king of badass) wins a race at Springfield (IL) on dirt and heads to Wisconsin to race in what is now IndyCar at the Milwaukee Mile. Upon getting there, he finds out his Lotus is broke so he has no ride. What to do? He changes tires on his dirt car and proceeds to capture the pole and eventually places 2nd in the race. Gotta love A. J.

Nowadays he and anyone he talked to that day would be suspended for a year and have to pay a $500,000 fine.

It really is hard to imagine a racer getting away with anything like that these days. Stories like this are why people reminisce about "the good old days" of racing.

I did, I only liked watching racing when people could BUILD cars and technology and not just have to all race the same exact car like it is today. It wasn’t even tha tlong ago when you could catch racing series where that was done. WRC was like that up until recently.

Yeah. I love F1 but the regulation is insane. I think it would be far better if teams were just given a certain budget and and dimensions to stay within and were allowed to innovate as they saw fit.

I agree, that would be better. It would be interesting to see the experiments of the 70s that I was too young to witness again. You still have people doing that in touring car racing fortunately. WRC is also down the F1 route of regulation and do did LeMans series when they started banning peoples cars left and right like what they did with Mazda.
To me part of the fun of racing is the development of technology. It’s why I like talking to people about their chumpcar or scca racing builds.

Yeah, I was talking to my friend a while back about it. How many more people would watch F1 if there were still 6-wheelers allowed. Or cars with giant “exhaust fans” that sucked the car to the road? Now the community freaks out when there’s a difference in the holes in the bodywork.
